About The Workshop

You know what's out in 2024? Being funny with your money, honey!

This recorded workshop series is all about how to get your ducks in row when it comes to personal finance!  We've recruited some of the most amazing women in finance to answer all your questions and guide you into your RICH BADDIE ERA. Gone are the days of being too scared to check your bank statements! We want to teach you how to be in control, set goals, and finally find the financial confidence you've been searching for.

Series Outline

Session #1: But the Economy: A conversation about the economy with Della Duncan of The Upstream Podcast

Before we begin talking all things finance, we wanted to begin the series by having a discussion about the current climate of the economy and how we as individuals contribute, participate, benefit (or don't benefit) from it. Join us for this fascinating conversation!

Della is a Renegade Economist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is an Atlantic Fellow of Social and Economic Equity at the International Inequalities Institute at LSE, a Right Livelihood Coach, former student and Faculty member of the MA Economics for Transition program at Schumacher College, and an Alternative Economics Teacher and Consultant

Session #2: Ya' Basic: Basic Finance 101 with Tracy Theemes

We're going back to basics with our pal Tracy who is here to answer all your basic questions, tell you how to prioritize what you need to focus on, and how you can move forward! We're chatting debt, credit, saving, income, etc. Let's get you organized!

Tracy Theemes, MA, CFP®, FCSI, FDS, is a certified financial planner and licensed financial adviser with a previous 12-year career as a practicing counsellor. As co-founder of Sophia Financial Group, she specializes in educating women in money matters and empowering them to take control of their financial lives. She is author of The Financially Empowered Woman. Check out her TEDx talk here.

Session #3: Worth it: Negotiation 101 with Rosemarie Perkin

How can any of us increase our wealth if we aren't aware of our worth?! Negotiation expert Rosemarie Perkin is here to help. This workshop will focus on building your confidence when asking for what you want and getting the best possible outcome. We will cover how to pick a reasonable target, frame a salary increase request, and increase your chance for success. We’ll even do some practice runs together!

Rosemarie Perkin is a multiracial leader and educator who has developed an introductory negotiations course for you (yes, you!). She is a leadership and negotiations instructor at Capilano University and a previous Business IT manager at Arc'teryx. A negotiation highlight of her career was doubling her salary over 5 short years after graduating from her bachelor's degree. She is excited to help you ask for what you want and deserve (and to help you navigate BC's new Pay Transparency laws as an employee).

Session #4: That's Rich: Saving + Investing 101 with Vancity

Many of us run scared when we hear the words "saving" and "investing" - it can be so confusing! What exactly is a TFSA? How much should we be saving for retirement? What the hell is a mutual fund?! The team at Vancity to the rescue! We're going to break it all down for you and show you that there is nothing to be scared of! Future you will be very grateful :)

Session #5: Life N' Death: Family and Life Planning with Vancity and Brood

How can we plan for the expected and unexpected? In life (and death), finance plays a huge role in the options you have at your fingertips. It can be so stressful planning for the future. What is possible? What can we afford? What CAN'T we afford? Vancity and our pals at Brood (the family care people) are here to chat with you about the sticky stuff that often keeps us up at night.

Important Notes:

  • Although we welcome people that live outside of Canada, most content will be directed towards Canadian finance
