COFFEE 101

May 8th and May 15th, 2025 // 5:15p - 7p

@ Rocanini Coffee Roasters Yaletown

Let's be real: The WORLD runs on coffee and we are obsessed with that hot bean go juice. But have you ever taken a second between throwing back shots of espresso to think about where this wonderful beverage comes from? How it's procured? The taste and different roast levels? It's traceability?

Let us indulge your coffee obsession with this incredible 2-part workshop series with our favorite coffee nerd, Stepanka!

In this workshop we will:

  • A history of coffee and where we are today in coffee culture
  • Guide you through a tasting of different coffees and talk about flavour notes alongside food pairings
  • Teach you the technique of cupping (the practice of observing the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee)
  • Lead you through how different countries and processes impact flavour of coffees
  • The theory of roasting beans (we will actually roast beans in this class!)
  • Discuss the importance of transparency in the coffee industry
  • Best practices to brewing and a recipe demonstration
  • And more!

You will walk away with:

A goody bag valued at $55!

  • A bag of special locally roasted coffee beans to take home!
  • A take home coffee cupping spoon
  • A Bad Academy Sticker pack

And, of course, more than enough coffee knowledge to impress (and annoy) your friends and family :)

Very limited spots! Sign up quick!

About the Instructor

Stepanka Sustrova (she/her) brings over 8 years of specialty coffee experience to the cupping table. She began her career as a part-time barista while at university in the Czech Republic, and before long she was a complete coffee devotee. Since then she's competed in four national-level coffee competitions (in addition to countless other regional-level events), became production roaster at House of Funk, trained cafe owners and staff, led latte art classes, coffee tastings, and cuppings like this one. Most recently, she began working with La Finca Distribution, which imports coffee from small Nicaraguan producers. Ask her what her favourite coffee origin is and you'll likely get three answers: Bolivia, Yemen, and Kenya...Come find out why at the workshop!

Refund Policy: Tickets are transferable, but unfortunately not refundable at The Bad Academy. We're a crazy small organization and operate on razor-thin margins, and as much as we'd like to account for life getting in the way, we have been burned too many times by no-shows, and last-minute refund requests etc. If you'd like to transfer your ticket to a friend, please email us at hello@thebadacademy.com with the name and email of the person taking your place, and we'll make sure to make the appropriate changes!
