Tiny Gardens Series

You don't need a ton of space to start a garden in your home!

About The Workshop

Join Bad Academy and City Beet Farm for a very special 4-part workshop series all about gardening! We're taking you from seed to harvest in just 4 hours, bb!

We recorded this workshop when the pandemic first began. Many of us were stuck at home, unsure of what might happen in the outside world. We were pleasantly surprised at how much fun we had starting our own gardens at home, even if we didn't have a ton of space. In this 4-part series, We're going to go over all the basics of how to start and grow your own garden no matter how much space you have! Whether you're interested in growing a whole new hobby, or just interesting in sharpening your plant knowledge, this is a great place to start!

Part 1: Seeds + Germination

Part 2: Soil + Fertilization

Part 3: Irrigation + Upkeep

Part 4: Harvesting

Originally recorded on: March 2020

About The Instructor(s)

City Beet Farm was born from a commitment between two farmers and a community of homeowners. Today, they grow a wide diversity of vegetables and flowers on a network of 13 front and backyards in the Mount Pleasant and Riley Park neighbourhoods of Vancouver, BC. Since we recorded, City Beet Farm has sold to a new partnership, but Maddy and Elena still remain great friends to each other and to the land we farm on!

Linkes & Resources

Part 1: Seeds + Germination

- Growing Zones: Look up in google "hardiness zone ....city you live in" --> this is particularly important if you are trying to establish any perennial plant (live multiple years) where as first and last frost dates are good to be aware of for annual vegetable growing.

- Here are some seed vendors to check out:

* Johnny's Select Seeds

* High Mowing Organic Seeds

* William Dam

* Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

We also highly recommend researching seed companies in your region because seeds will be regionally adapted to your growing conditions. Big seed companies like those listed above will contract growers all over the place to grow seed so what you are purchasing is likely grown in an area where the climate is very different than what you are working with.

PNW Seed Companies we like:

- BC Eco Seed Co-op

- Adaptive Seeds

- Salt Spring Seeds

- Uprising Organic Seeds

- City Beet uses this grow light and it's worked great for them: https://www.sunblasterlighting.com/our-products/grow-lighting/nanotech-t5-reflectors/

Part 2: Soil + Fertilization

- Here's a great video by Patagonia that briefly explains Regenerative Agriculture!

- Some info on Liquid Kelp Fertilizer

- The fuck is Compost Tea...

- Worm Castings

- Lots of info on companion planting
